I thought they were so experienced and smart. And didn't they check the weather forecast and factor in the possibility of a snowstorm in mid December?

Having a GPS lets you know where you are. It does not broadcast your position to others. There is equipment to do this but it is generally larger and requires more power than hikers can deal with.

Sometimes even the people that believe they are experienced make simple mistakes. Maybe they thought that nothing would happen. There are a lot of people who think that way. And then there are those that feel they have so much knowledge and have been mountain climbers for years and didn't feel it was important to bring that device. I think people don't always use caution when making some decisions. Maybe it was going to be a simple short trip and they didn't want to take the extra baggage. But at any rate, the bottomline really is, no matter how prepared you are, if it is your time to leave this earth, you most certainly will. :(

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Experienced people can sometimes make mistakes because they get over-confident. Don't tell me you've never been over-confident about something and ended up getting in a bind. Theirs just happened to be life-threatening.

Someone on this board suggested that GPS should be mandatory in the future. I think it's a good idea.
