The normal umbilical cord has 3 vessels (not veins), though many children do have only 2. A two-vessel cord is associated with (not causative) an increased likelihood of other congenital anomalies, particularly of the kidneys, though many such children will be completely normal.

Having only two can lead to intrauterine growth restriction, or kidney problems.

"Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a common diagnosis in obstetrics and carries an increased risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity"
