My son has been holding his bottle with assistance for a few weeks now and he sits with little assistance. Hes only 12 weeks old. He tries to pull himself to sitting when hes slighlty leaning in my arms or when i sit him on the couch leaning back.

I sat my son on the couch about 3 weeks ago turned to look at my cat and turned back and he was on his face. I learned then to lay him on the floor if im not holding him. With the bottle he has been trying to put it towards him for about 4 weeks or so and now just putting his hands on it but if i let go it drops.

LADY TRINITY sorry but you may have read and interpeted wrong. I hold the bottle and my son chose to either not eat or bottle not by my choice. I will NEVER go without feeding my son.

My son was six months old when he done these things. But, he was over 2 months premature so he was technically four months when he first held his bottle and set up. Different babies do different things at different times. Some babies thrive socially and others physically. What to Expect the First Year is an awesome book that gives you month by month instructions on what your child should be doing. Babies sit with support a very long time before they actually sit. Atleast my son did. At six months he could sit in the middle of the floor and play with toys. That is average. He put his hands on his bottle for a long, long time until finally at six months he could feed himself his entire bottle without help. This makes things much easier.

Mine was very young when she put her hands to the bottle, like a month or so. I forget when she did it by herself. Before 6 months maybe? She started by me putting it to her mouth and her holding it, then she began picking it up herself. She began sitting up without help at 6 months old.

That's good that he's trying to pull with his arms. I think it is normal for a 3 mo old, though everyone is different.

3 months is a great age ! Enjoy! The firsts just keep coming at this stage.

A baby that young has no business trying to hold his bottle himself. At that age you should be trying to do everything in the world to simulate breast feeding. You are depriving him of the close contact that he needs with you while he is feeding. In order to make up for what he is missing you should be holding him against your breast, skin to skin, and be making eye contact with him as much as possible. Nature put your breasts where they are for a reason. The whole idea was that every few hours you would be cuddling with your baby. You would be giving him a chance to look at your face and to hear your voice. You would be touching him, caressing him and talking softly to him. A breastfeeding baby will reach his hand up and stroke his mothers face, while he is nursing his eyes will never leave your face. You are depriving your son of all of these things. The very least that you can do is hold him and try to simulate some of the things that he is missing. At this stage in your sons life drinking from his bottle is a great deal more than just a way to receive nourishment. it is a very important time of socialization with the most significant person in his world....you. By letting him hold his own bottle you are missing the whole intent of nursing a baby. You know, it is not too late for you to re-lactate and start feeding your baby naturally. You could contact the local La Leche league and they could help you every step of the way.
If you have some medical reason why you cannot nurse your baby (like you take medication that would hurt him) then please try to do the things that I mentioned so that he will at least get some of the benefits of breast feeding. Please don't let him hold his own bottle, that is just pathetic. It makes me so sad to imagine a little baby that old trying to self soothe himself to the point that he is even holding his own bottle. There is a very precious bond between a newborn and his mother and when that bond is broken there can be severe consequenses. I adopted my 5th child and could not nurse her because of medical reasons but I did all these other things so that she would not be totally deprived of the loving benefits of nursing. Please give some thought to the things I have told you.
Take care and good luck.
Lady Trinity~p.s. I just wanted to tell you that I am sorry if I misinterpreted your question. I thought you were asking how soon you could expect your baby to hold his own bottle. I am sorry if I misunderstood. I did try to write you an email to explain but I could not send it because they said your address was not confirmed. Again, I am sorry if I misunderstood.

Every child is different. Some babies sit up faster then others. That's good your baby is doing it already. But make sure you keep an eye on him because at the same time he still isn't strong enough to do it on his own.

Typically, by the age of six months, they have it down pat. Isn't it cute?
