No No No No No No....the accepted use of the square root symbol (standard definition!!!!!) is the square root of nine is 3. No plus or minus in it. No way. Nada. That's like saying sine inverse of 1/2 is 390 degrees. Square root of nine is 3. That is it. Flat out.
Where does the plus or minus come from? If you are solving for x in x^2=9. Then you don't KNOW if x is positive or if x is negative, so x=3 or x=-3. But the square root of nine is DEFINITELY positive 3. So IF the equation is x=square root of 9 then the answer is x=3.
Unless you wanna try to change the whole rest of the math world. And all the calculators ever manufactured.

well, actually sqrt9= modulus 3
modulus 3 can be +/-3(when u remove mod)
now, lets check, -3^2 =9 and 3^2=9
both satisfy.but,we say sqrt is always positive.
the no in the root is always positive.
actually its +/-3.not +3 itself..
also, if u have 2nd root, u ll have 2 values...nth root,n values..
hope this helps.

To understand clearly:
(-3)^2=(-3)*(-3)=+9
also
(+3)*(+3)=9
Hence square root of 9 is + or -3.
In certain conditions we have to neglect the signs + or - when we need to use the modulus of the result.

Yes, it's both. Generally, for the nth root of a number, you get n answers. For example, the there are 4 numbers that are the fourth root of 2
