Computrace LoJack for Laptops is rendered 100% useless unless the stolen item is connected to the Internet. I'm sure the odds of a common thief's having an Internet connection under an account with their own personal information is pretty low..

Not unless you can customize something. The trouble is that Lo-Jack in a car is very well hidden. There's no such place to hide a similar device in a computer.

Either way, there's a very good chance that a computer that's been stolen has already been broken down and sold for parts.

The link listed says it is for laptops, but I do not know why it would not work for desktop systems. As others have said, if the hard drive is replaced or re-formatted, any software-only 'phone home' system will be defeated. Also, other firewalls could block the communications, effectively defeating the system
