What area of the midwest do you think is on the east side of the country?
Last time I looked at a map that delineated the major geographic areas/regions of the US, none of the Midwest states were in the east.

Typically speaking, Western USA is any area west of the Mississippi, but since the OHio River joins the Mississpi west of Kentucky and Ohio is also west of the Appalachians, it gets included in the heartland.
The "far" west is so defined by states in or west of the Rocky Mountains.
The New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions would be the Eastern states.

Because at one time, from the perspective of the settlers on the East Coast, anything west of the Appelachian Mountain range was "Out West". As the newer western frontiers west of the Mississippi were opened up, the term "Mid West" came into use to distiguish that region from points farther west.

In the same vein, the European explorerers used terms such as the Middle East, Near East and Far East, to distiguish the various regions eastward of Europe.

Hope this helps!

Well, the people who named it so at the time were all living on the east cost. They saw places like Nebraska and Iowa to be very far west, but not on the west coast. So they called it the midwest.

West used to be considered the Rock Mountains before the entire continent was explored. MidWest is halfway between the East coast and the Rock Mountains

What do you mean by east? I am in the midwest- pretty much smack dab in the middle of the country on a Eto W basis. Probably called midwest because it is in the middle of the states- there are more states to the east than to the west.

You can blame easterners on that one. According to their egocentric point of view, anything west of the Appalachians was not worth considering. The Mid West referred (originally) to a group of states from Kansas to Iowa that were between the central and western portions of the United States.

I think they base it more on the location of the general mass of population in regards to geography.
