The top of the Stanley Cup (which looks like a bowl) was the original trophy given to the best hockey club in Canada by the Canadian Governor General. The Stanley Cup we see now is the original cup plus ring upon ring of all the names of everyone who has ever won the cup.

Because when Lord Stanley donated the first bowl for the Cup, that's what it was. he specified that teams would be allowed to buy a ring to engrave their names on (they had to do the work themselves) and that it went to the best hockey team. The original has been replaced and is now in the Hockey hall of Fame, along with the original neck and several main rings. The Bowl is also a replica.

Because you don't drink out of a bowl (like a dog), and "Lord Stanley's Bowl" would sound silly. It's Lord Stanley's Cup, the way he would have liked it

It's like when you get soup. A cup is smaller than a bowl. It just wasn't big enough, so they had to make it into a bowl. But they couldn't change the name to stanley bowl... that'd just be weird

They should change it to, Stanley Puck!! lol..and change the bowl to a puck!! ..:P

it's a mug. lord stanley's mug! its a bit of both actually. you can drink out of it or you can mix a ceasar salad in it for a nice meal.
