I have 1 'functional' cyst on my left ovary and 2 'functional' cysts on my right ovary that keeps growing and I am in a lot of pain. I was told 3 months ago that 1 ruputred but when looked at on the ultrasound it's still there. I am constantly taking pain pills, but people tell me not to worry that they are going to go away. When? My doctor said that my hormone levels are really high so I can't take birth control to help with that because of my Pulmonary Emboli history. I'm at a loss. What do I do? What would you do in this situation?

First of function cyst are normal. General cyst of the ovary under 4 - 6 cm (2 to 3 inches) are best left alone.

The other question is are you sure your pain is due to the cysts. There are a variety of other conditions from endometriosis, muscle strains, arthritis to hernias that can cause pain in the same region.

How Ovarian Cysts are Usually Treated
Watchful Waiting. If you have no symptoms and ultrasound shows a small, fluid-filled cyst, your doctor may simply schedule another pelvic exam and ultrasound in six weeks. The concept behind watchful waiting is to not actively treat the cyst until does not go away as your hormones change. An unchanging or growing cystic ovary needs further investigation.

Birth Control Pills. If you have a functional cyst that is larger in size and causing some symptoms, birth control pills may be prescribed. The purpose of birth control pills is to alter your hormone levels so the cyst will shrink. Birth control pills will reduce the probability of other cysts growing.

Surgery. Your cyst may be surgically removed if it is large, solid or filled with debris, persistently growing, irregularly shaped, or causing pain or other symptoms. If the cyst is not cancerous, it can be surgically removed without also removing the ovary. This is called a cystectomy. In some cases, the doctor may want to remove the affected ovary, while leaving the other intact in order to maintain your ability to have a normal hormone cycle.

I would go to my OB/GYN and explain the pain you are experiencing and that he/she needs to come up with an alternative remedy to taking pain pills. The cysts will NOT go away on their own and will probably only get worse. You will probably begin to have heavy bleeding and more extreme pain down the line if something isn't done. If my OB/GYN didn't think it was that serious, I would get another opinion. FYI...I almost died from blood loss because of uterine cysts and endometriosis...I was in ICU for 4 days and had to have a blood transfusion. I eventually had a hysterectomy...Good luck and take care...

wife had this problem. she bled for months. i mean like at least 3 weeks out of a month. it started to cause her major depression. the pain, bleeding, emotionally she was a wreck. she finally went into surgery to have it removed, and now she is back to normal. i'd really really recommend getting a second opinion and looking at your options. no one should live with pain if it can be corrected.
