It was thought that The Beatles had "changed the world" in thought as popular and charismatic as they were, so people related this to a revolution. But they make it clear that they dont want to change the world, people choose to do with thoughts what they wish. Now you got me with this song on my mind.

At the time.
It wasn't really considered a song that had much social implications at all.
I was around then!
There were some much better examples about. Except for Lennon after he left the Beatles they were never really considered very much out left of "mainstream"political thought.
Mostly very politically correct.
If you want to listen to social comment music of that era listen to Eric Burdon,Bob Marley(the prophet) and Dylan,oh my God there were so many.
I don't think it would even have much relevance today."you say you want a revolution, well you know ,
we all got to change the world" etc. etc. etc.
Where is the social point or impact in the lyrics?
It had been said before, and hundreds of times since!

You Say You Want A Revolution... many Russians believe that the Western cultural forces symbolized by Beatles music helped hollow out communism, slowly eroding its authority until it collapsed. That it disintegrated without a huge war is the greatest blessing of the last half of the 20th century. In other words, “hard power” (Western strength and resolve) and “soft power” (Western ideas of freedom) worked together, with plenty of help from brave refuseniks, a pragmatic, bumbling and ultimately peace-loving Mikhail Gorbachev—and the numbing effects of vodka.

it has as much bearing on to days society as it did when it was written, that may be why there is another song written for this time by john Mayer called waiting for the world to change.
