haven't read eragon yet, but they say it's better since it's written by a prodigy

I would say Harry Potter is much better than Eragon. Eragon didn't have enough of a plot to make the book good. Harry Potter may have had a tad too many details in it, but then again so did the Lord of the Rings. So I'd have to say Harry Potter.

Harry Potter. Solid plots in all the books, good characters, and of course it's one of the best selling books in the world.
I do love Eragon though. It's fresh, but smells surprisingly of LOTR...

Not read the Eragon book, and HP can be a bit monotonous to read sometimes (and then this happened, and then this happened, etc).
As regards the films - HP top quality, Eragon a disappointing yawn-fest throughout (better graphics on your Playstation, and better acting as well !)
