The Proximate anysis of coal is moisture, ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon by difference. Ultimate anaysis usually measure C, H ,O (I think) as well things like S, P. Other trace elements are possible.

The proximate analysis of coal will vary with rank (peat through to anthracite) and location is the world. For example Australian coals are generally about one third the sulphur level of North American coals.

Carbon "C"
You can produce carbon Monoxide (C0) poisonous and carbon Dioxide (CO2) . Carbon dioxide is the preferred result of "Burning" coal which is basically having the Oxygen ( O2) react wit the carbon

Other fuels have other composition, mostly compounds of Carbon and Hydrogen ( Natural gases, alcohols and gasolines for example). When there is burning , the Hydrogen becomes water ( H2O) and the carbon part mostly CO2 ( balance CO).

Hydrogen can also be burned as a fuel to produce water.

Coal, gasolines, Hydrogen and any compound that can combine with Oxygen and has as byproduct a release of energy would be a considered a fuel.

Think about the origin of coal. It is essentially fossilized (or metamorphosed) plant matter that formed from the accumulation of vast fern and tree-moss swamp forests in prehistoric times. As such, coal contains carbon (basic molecule of life), hydrocarbons (hydrogen and carbon), oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur-containing compounds, and some phosphorus-containing chemicals. Hard coal, or anthracite, is up to 98% pure carbon, whereas softer grades have less carbon, and so, more impurities.

Depends on whether it's hard coal (anthracite) or soft coal. Soft coal is easier to mine, but has a TON of sulphur, which, when burned creates sulphuric acid, which forms acid rain.
