My best friend is gay. He came out of the closet a few months ago. We've been friends since we were seven. We're 19 now and in college. We also practice Wicca together and lots of people seem to think that we're doing gay stuff together at our rituals. Not true. How should I handle this?

Actually he did lose a lot of friends. His father even beat the crap out of him and kicked him out of the house. He's living with his mom now.

Obviously you don't know what "bashed" means. What your going through is harrassment. Sorry, I know you probably don't know the difference, but for me it was 70 something stitches. I would have rather have been verbally harrassed.

If you havent already voiced your concern to other people or let them know that you are not gay, then i would try that. Tell them that just because your best friend is gay, doesnt mean you are. My best friend is a lesbian and we are almost inseperable.
I would also educated them on the fact that paracticing Wicca is also not a sign that you are gay.
If nothing else works, go with the flow and ignore them, or play along and say yup, so?!

The same way I would...
Anybody who's going to look at something I do and slap me with the term "gay" isn't anybody I'd want to associate with anyway.
I don't find Gay to be much of an insult, what do I care of some jerk thinks I sleep with guys. I'm not trying to impress him.
If somebody calls you gay, try this:
"Maybe I am, Maybe I'm not. Either way, I'd never sleep with you. Sorry to shatter your hopes and dreams like that."
and just move on.

In addition to Ember's answer, as a last resort check to see what your college's sexuall harrassment policy is. Being bashed is harrassment.

First off im glad that you are his best friend still. That is very awsome for you to stick to you friend!! I am assuming that the friends who are mocking you are the ones who did not like him to start with. i bet they are just using this as a wedge to polorize you from him. Don't let them manipulate you in this way.

Ignore the verbal issues.
If a confrontation turns physical, have them arrested for assault.

If your not gay then thats all that matters. People who say things like that just don't understand. When people don't understand they are scared. when they are scared people make things up and usually its hateful. Just remeber you are not gay and thats all that matters.
