I am an Ophthalmic Asst.. The reason for the "sore" eyes is..when we are on the computer we tend to stare and not blink as we normally would, therefore, not lubricating the cornea's properly. You need to either consciously blink more, take a break and close your eyes for a few seconds every 10 mins or so, or before you get on the computer put a drop of natural tears into your eyes ( not visine)

There are some good answers out there. The sore eyes are probably caused by your eyes having to constantly adjust to something. You may need glasses, but other suggestions are good, too.
-A LCD monitor alleviates some of the problems. Try to get a monitor as large as you can, keeping in mind the size of your desk and pocketbook.
-Do you have a flourescent light near your monitor? Turn it off or move it away. The emf's (ElectroMagenetic Fields) in flourescent lights cause a flicker in the monitor, which will cause eye strain, even if you can't detect it easily. I've noticed that females can see the flicker much easier than males.
-Make sure that your monitor is not across from a window or other bright light source. The reflection of the window on the monitor will cause eye strain. Get an anti-glare screen for this.
-Take breaks from watching the screen. Look at something across the room every couple minutes so that your eyes can focus on something else.

All the time. I don't think there is any cure except moving away from the screen. Take a break, and if you have to use the computer, try writing it by hand first, or something, to give your eyes a break. Then, when you go back to the computer, you have to look at the paper in hand insted of the screen

Not unusual. Assuming you've had your eyes tested, take a break now and then, if only to look away from the screen and focus on something in the distance. Actually, a total break, i.e. getting up and walking around, will help your eyes, your back, everything . . .

I teach my trainees to do just that, deliberately get up and walk around the suite, read the notices, chat to neighbours etc. Works wonders for comfort & productivity.

You may need to increase the refresh rate of your monitor (the number of times the monitor updates- flashes, each second).

Right click on an empty space on your desktop and click properties. Then click on settings then advanced. The next part depends on your graphics card manufacturer, but for me you have to click on the monitor tab, then select a higher refresh rate from the dropdown box. (75Hz, plus should be enough).

If you stare at anything long enough your eyes will feel sore.

All we can really to to minimize this is try to eliminate glare, minimize brightness, and most importantly ..... gets our eyes examined in case we need glasses or a new prescription on our lenses.

Hi.
Get yourself a non relective screen mask for you monitor,or position the monitor so that there are no annoying reflections.
Don't sit in the dark.
Have a fifteen minute break every hour.
look at other things in your room every few minutes,if only for a couple of seconds- this helps avoid what they call 'focal lock'.

You need an LCD monitor...
CRTs (tube) hurt your eyes and thats why you get headaches and sore eyes...
If you still get unconfortable with an LCD, then see the doctor and find out what is going on with your eyes..

using a flat screen (LCD) monitor helps a lot, at least for me. some days I spend 18 hours on the computer and my eyes never bother me.
