I'd say they're the same thing, but then again a 4X4 can also be a pickup truck as well as an SUV.
Then there's all wheel drive (AWD), where all four wheels have power and cannot shift between 4X4 and 4X2 mode.
So, to answer the other question, the first number is total # of wheels, and the second is how many wheels have power. Another example is a 6X4 ATV, which has two axles in the back, powering a total of 4 wheels, then two non-powered wheels in the front for steering.

There is no differemce between aa 4WD and a 4x4. Its just a different way of saying the same thing. There is only a difference between 4WD and AWD. Both are four wheel drive, but AWD is all time, meaning it is always on.
You are correct about the numbers. 4x4 means that it is 4 wheel drive, and the vehicle has 4 wheels total. 2x4 means that it is 2 wheel drive and the vehicle has 4 wheels total.

SUV-Suburban Utility Vehicle -not all are 4 wheel drive that's an option on most .4WD and 4X4 are the same and means four wheel drive .On SUV's 2WD - two wheel drive usually the front (on trucks the rear) ,4WD- four wheel drive -all 4 .However this doesn't mean all 4 tires are being powered unless you are in 4WD LOCK or in most pickups 4X4 LOW. The difference between An AWD and 4X4 AWD -all wheel drive usually means one front and one rear tire spinning until a traction lock applies itself then all 4 tires spin.4X4 usually means all 4 tires spinning at the same rate.

RE:
What is the difference between a 4WD SUV and a 4x4?
Is there any difference? I called a rental car to rent a 4WD SUV and they said,"Do you mean a 4x4?" I thought they were the same thing.
Also, bonus points to someone who can tell me what the numbers signify. I know one of them tells you if it is a 2WD or 4WD, but what's the...

4x4 and 4wd are the same thing. they both mean that all 4 trires are moving. ever hear of 2wd or 2x4 that means that only 2 tires are doing the work. either the front 2 (front wheel drive) or the 2 back ones (rear wheel drive). front wheel drive means that the front two tires are pulling the car to move. rear wheel drive the back tires are pushing the car to move. so 4wd or 4x4 means all the tries are going to move the car. it is also possible to have a vehicle that does both, you can turn it to either 2x4 or 4x4. that is what my truck has, its called 4x4 on the fly. i drive the truck in 2x4 on the road and 4x4 off the road.

4 x 4 . 4 wheels, 4 wheels pulling.
4 x 2. 4 wheels, 2 wheels pulling.
A 4x4 SUV is most generally a truck or type of station wagon, and there are some cars that are 4x4.
