Just like a cd-writer vs cd-rom, you will need a dvd-writer to be able to copy items (or burn) to a disk/dvd.

You will be able to watch movies and play games on your dvd-rom, as long as your computer's specs meet the minimum requirements of the software. Look on the bottom of game boxes to see if your pc measures up.
