Unless some system files are corrupted this is most likely due to a defective RAM module.

Disconnect all external USB & Firewire devices .... is the problem still there ?

Buy some replacement RAM at a place that offers a no hassle 30 day return policy. Test it with the new ram & see if the problem persists.

Run a Permissions Check and Disk Verify with the Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

Well, either add more memory, or just get a new computer. Macs are pretty old. Accually it just depends what year it was made. If it was made any erlier than 2001, you need a new computer. I would suggest a HP or a dell.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
