This is a very general, simplistic question and frankly misses the point. The better question is why must people know what they want in life? Most human beings want or need many things in their lives, usually at different times.
Life is constantly changing, as are our wants and needs. It can't be distilled in the way you are imagining.
I think human nature is such that we all go through phases where we are perfectly happy (or think we are), then other phases where we feel off-track or out of balance.
And as we all know, wanting and needing are two different things and some people tend to mix them up. We really only need a few things -- everything else is wanting.
I have come to accept the following truths as the things I want or need in my life. These help me to keep things in perspective:
1) All humans are selfish, excepting the more pure among us
2) All humans have the potential to be good and bad (relative to the laws that govern us)
3) Some humans have one calling\career AND some have many callings and are not satisfied with "wanting" one type of life or career.
4) Some humans limit themselves in their heads, believing that they "must have" or want the new car\house\vacation\blah blah. Pursuing material items leave them empty and unfulfilled. They work like dogs for their bling, thinking they have no choice.
5) Some humans prefer to limit their wanting and learn to live within their means, or in support of a higher good (such as using recycled goods, such as clothing and furniture). These folks know that they have many choices in how they live their lives
I hope this helps.

I am not sure, and I am not sure if anyone else is sure either. But as you ask, how many? I would take the opportunity to say for many, and many more yet to come: nearly approaching about seven billion to the latest count from all regions of the globe now. We are all just passing time right now, in most simplistic hopefulness, waiting for this world to find its bearing after recent climate changes, to come to balance itself according t the new world order prescribed by powers that are supper for the world, until then we are not sure what is it exactly that we want. We like to stay prepared, not well planned. Do we want to fight? Not sure! Do we want peace in our ranks? Not sure either! May be science is OK, or may be not? May be, may be religion alone? We will wati and see? Stress in our lives ... what causes it? We? May be, or may be our life style, or traffic, or too much tea, and lttle sleep. But do we want to get rid of stree, it after all kicks us into action everyday, and then smoking, and drinking and over eating, is this bad and artificial living or is this becoming a lifestyle, could be jsut snobbery or sheer pretentiouness or ignorance refined? You see, we are not sure s yet but we need not worry specialists are looking for answers to questions that we really are not sure that they should be asking. One thing is for sure, however, in our lives - something or the other must keep happening around us. This is what we want. And we should always be the first to know and whatever happens we should be the first that other people hear from . And then all that happens to TV, why does not happen next door? We are not sure. The news of all sort excite us. And if something happens somewhere or to someone I already know, it excites me more. But I am not sure if TV can be my best friend? My work? I think I should be doing something different now, as work patterns and life routines are all on the go for a complete shift ... yes, this is the world paradigm shift.
What we are going through now is a transient stage in all tihngs. Our culture for example is going to be a global amalgamation of all cultures, for the emergence of a singular culture, consisting of all tall, dark haired, light coffee coloured people doing similar things watching similar programmes world wide. Internet can be good. We go to get together before alien descend upon us fro outer space to beat us up. Since all those funky broadcasts, and ill produced and digitally telecasted programmes showing us doing hard core violence against each other would be reaching their world. As for the ethical and moral values arec oncerned, all I have to say is that we are simply unsure, but we all are working hard on them all the time.
You see, are we not hundred percent sure about anything, and when we are not completely sure about anything then we try to be sure about almost everything. And this is how we progress, I suppose?

Probably half of the country. I am 25 and still don't know what i want to do - apart from get a job that pays more!!! The reason that i went straight to work and not do a degree. (i am working on a job that pays more)
I agree partly with a comment about cheaper public transport, however not everyone that comes from abroad is after a free life. It is very very difficult to set someone up in this country and yes i am speaking from personal experience. Don't paint every immigrant with the same brush.

I want to become a dictator of the UK. Seriously...I want all criminals, junkies, bullies and drunks shot. I want better education for all children, I want better health care for people. I want less people turning up here for an easy ride, I suggest we only let people with technical or specialized jobs into the UK. I want trains, buses and the like to be cheaper, I want to do away with all politicians and set up a central commitee instead that is run by the people for the people. Anyone who has two or more cars will have them taken away, slum landlords will be deprived of their properties and forced to live in the conditions they put others under........I know exactly what I want but not how to get it.

The most important thing in life is worship. Unless you dont understand Allah`s and Muhammed`s (peace be upon him) word you cant acheive anything in life(besides worldly success).
To me the most important are these things---- Understanding Koran, understanding Muhammed`s word, get close to Allah(to be Allah`s best friend) ,to literally see Allah.

What I want out of life changes daily. Because, after the success of one thing, I always want more.
The things that don't change:
I want my children to live well adjusted, happy lives.
I want my marriage to succeed, and to live happily ever after with my husband.
I want my birds to live out full and happy lives with us.
But, I hope I don't ever get "satisfied" with my life. Satisfaction to me signals that I'm comfortable, and finished with working towards change, and that's not something I'll ever be comfortable with.

Me.
No idea.
A deaf dumb blonde nymphomaniac with big t*ts would be nice. Better still if her dad was an elderly millionaire and owned a brewery.
