spark plugs, wires, fuel injector, starter. they could all be the problem. You might be on the right track with a tune up; changing the spark plugs and wires would certainly help. there are also fuel additives that may help clean the inside of the engine to help with the fuel injection ports.

With the advent of electronic ignition systems tune up intervals have been greatly extended. A properly cared for otherwise vehicle might go 50,000 miles with out a tune up. I run a 93 Chrysler Le Baron 3.0 127,000 miles. Only thing changed was oil, filter, and transmission fluid. the car performed as new getting more than 30 mpg.
Now this is not to say that you should not get a tune up, but if your car runs bad, by all means get it tuned up. It can't hurt and will only help.

Tune ups are somewhat different with each car and the amount of use. Hard starting is a good sign you need one so I would suggest you get a complete one and then for starters figure one a year for reasonable use.

Changing OIL is more important . Regardless of what the specs say, keeping the oil fresh will make the engine last years longer.

Once a month is REALLY good but every other month is a fair target. About $25 at most shops (in California at least) - pick one near a coffee shop and the matter becomes easy.

(wish my Girlfriend would buy ME a '03 camero - grin!)

Merry Christmas

Please don't assume that a "tune up" will cure your starting problem automatically. A tune up may be a good preventative/maintenance idea. In order to get your starting problem cured tell the repair shop what it is doing and get them to focus on that problem first. A "tune up" may not cure your specific problem!

Your first major tune-up should be around 30k miles. It's a very deep tune-up, changes tranny fluid, spark plugs (ignition wires will be checked) brakes checked, battery termails cleaned, and all sorts of good stuff!

It's time for a tune-up whenever the owner's manual says it's supposed to. I'd get that thing in the shop asap.
