if your corsa is after x reg the gear linkage is worn out, a very small amount or ware in the linkage makes 1st and 2nd gears almost impossible to select. This needs to be replaced at a garage because the setting of the new linkage is a right pain to get right if you have not done one before. I am changing 1 or 2 a week at my garage, its a bad design fault with vauxhall, the old shape corsa had no problems.

First check the clutch cable (if its older style corsa- newer corsa's are hydaulic) most likely to be the gear linkage, i used to work for vauxhall and have replaced many of them for same cause.

This a problem on corsa`s , the gear linkage rubber`s wear and this is most likely what the problem is on your car ,
Quite easy to fix if your any good at d.i.y but if not a garage will rip you off for about £80 +

hi, I even have a fifty 3 plate Corsa attractiveness and my 2d kit additionally gave me issues. the subject is the kit linkage. fortuitously my Corsa, while the subject occured, became nevertheless below the manufacturers 3 3 hundred and sixty 5 days warrenty. I took mine to W.Grose and that they admit that's a 'elementary fault' for the Corsa. Be clever, the vehicle is risky tocontinual, get the linkage fixed asap. Regards. Matthew.

dead cert its the linkage, doddle to adjust, 1 spanner and a pin to lock the system inside the car,the gear box end locks with a plunger on top of the selector unit, but be sure to check the rubbers on the linkage above the gear box and also the bush the rod passes thro in the bulkhead, a small amount of wear can be compensated for by fiddling with the setting, other wise its a new linkage or bush, not expensive and not beyond anyone who can access a heyes manual

if you can get the car in to other gears and is just reverse 1st and 2nd it just means that the gear lever needs adjusting where it connects to the gearbox it is not a big job only about 10 minutes most haynes manuals tell you how to do it, it is very straight forward. and highly unlikely to be your clutch hope this helps

Check the clutch adjustment, it sounds like the clutch is dragging (not fully disengaging). If you can select the gears without the engine running this will be the cause.

my friend had a vectra like this, it turned out to be something wrong with the gear box but because he left it that long he knackered up the clutch. so when he finally got it repaired( a year and a half later) he had to have the clutch done as well.but the mechanic told him its easier to do both at once because you have to remove one part to get to the other. anyway get a garage to look at it. take it to a main dealer if you can(just to find out what the problem is) then take it to a smaller place knowing what needs to be done,i.e cheaper than main dealer
