I recently met a new friend. This person does not dislike visual beauty. She is simply unable to recognize or appreciate art or fashion. Beauty and art are not in her visual or verbal vocabulary. It is similiar to being tone deaf or color blind.

A few years ago I came across a word that referred to people who are unable to see beauty. I dismissed the word because I could not relate. But now I realize there are many people who are not able to relate to physical/visual beauty. However, they do relate to physical force and power.

It could be "afilotehnos" (αφιλότεχνος), which means the person that is not interested in arts, who cannot appreciate it. But I doubt whether you had that in mind, this is a greek word which I do not think it is used in English.

I think that my husband also has this syndrome. Asked to go to Niagara Falls, he would say "Nah. I've seen a water fall. Seen one, seen 'em all!"

Museums and art galleries are not his thing either.

Now, give him a thorny mental conundrum, and he is all over it!! Very brainy. I mean Mensa brainy. So, he's a keeper

Philistine? I know that word refers to people who *don't* appreciate visual beauty, but I'm not sure if it would apply to someone who *can't*.
