I work as an admin assistant. It's really just a fancy name for receptionist/secretary.

Administrative Assistant positions vary, depending on the company. Attached are two links (one is old and gives a general idea of some of the duties) describing the job, but please keep in mind that these vary from one job to the other. It also depends on the level (the first link is an entry level position that does not require much experience).
An AA/EA (Executive Assistant) once was called Secretary but should not be confused with receptionist (still clerical but does not require much detail as the AA). You can check Yahoo Hot Jobs and/or Monster.com for more administrative assistant jobs but basically it is a position in assistance to someone in management (i.e., Director, V.P., etc.). You will take care of the administrative duties (i.e., calendaring, telephone, filing, copying, arrange meetings, etc.) so that he/she can manage the day-to-day business. Depending on the company and level of the AA/EA, you can make upwards of $110k a year (or as little as $40k).

KARIN C got it right. An Administrative Assistant used to be called a Secretary. The position is different things to different companies. Be sure to ask specifically what the requirements are and what your duties would be.
Just a suggestion, even if you aren't sure if you are interested, if you think you might be, ask for an interview. It keeps your options open and gives you experience. If you have held the same position for a long time, you can get rusty with your interview skills.

"Administrative Assistant," not Administrators Assistance. It's fancy-speak for a secretary or clerical worker. Generally it involves answering phones and directing calls, typing documents, filing papers or going to get files, interfacing with other administrative assistants to do things, sometimes ordering supplies and stationary items. Admin Assists are also sometimes asked to take on things like making coffee for the boss, organizing lunch/dinner functions, and generally helping out wherever they are needed.
Admin Assistants need to have good people skills and a lot of patience. It can be an interesting job, but it's all about people, so you have to like interfacing with a lot of different people.

In an office, it's general office duties which assit the administrator - your senior. Things like filing, answering the phone, sending faxes for them, that sort of thing.

assistance mean you help out to do little duties to make it lighter on the administrator, who at times have their hand full.
