'something should be done' ....
The eternal cry of those who wish to impose their own decisions and choices on others ..
In my view, individuals who are regarded as well educated and sane (enough) to make an informed decision but still wish to take (what others might regard as) an unacceptable risk should be allowed to do so.
The only thing that 'should be done' it is to ensure adequate education (and sanity).
As for cost - well, when spread over the whole Tax paying public it's only a few pennies from each of us .. a small price to pay for us all to have the freedom to make these choices.

In my opinion they did something extremely foolish: they climbed a mountain in winter using a technique called "Alpine ascent", which means "as lightly equipped as possible", because they wanted to make the ascent "as quickly as possible". Given the fact the weather on mountain tops can become nasty in short order it was foolish to attempt this ascent at this time of the year without flares, extra food, extra clothing for frigid conditions, fuel for fires, radios or extra cell phone batteries, etc. Another thing that might be possible would be to put emergency supplies for climbers on the mountain, and for the climbers themselves to have GPS locators on them so that they could be located in an instant instead of having to look all over the mountain for the survivors. Some of these things should probably become laws as it would save lives.

I can tell you in one word--Preparation. Know what the weather is going to be during the time you expect to be hiking. Take more than you need of everything to survive. Train so you know what to do when something goes wrong. Take a GPS unit and a cell phone with CHARGED batteries. A Personal Locator Beacon isn't a bad idea.
They died too soon. But mostly it was their fault. People die every day in car accidents. Is there any difference?

I agree with sympathy for the families, BUT, No one should be allowed to climb such a mountain in the winter, period!! Or, the govt should charge a huge deposit, 1 million or so, to cover the cost of having such a rescue effort for idiots who choose such dangerous behavior. Think of the rescue workers who endanger their lives trying to save the ones who choose such stupid behavior.

What can be done when there are still people crazy enough to choose to climb a dangerous mountain in the winter? They knew the risks. They chose to risk it. They lost. The ones I feel bad for are their families and friends.

Maybe climbers should carry some kind of GPS locating device with an alert button on it so if they get into trouble we can find them easier.

Even though the climbers were expierianced with harsh conditions, they never should have been up there in the first place.
There should be a regulated climbing season.

The risk is part of the thrill of mountain climbing. They shouldn't have gone if they did not have the capability to complete the task successfully.
