I'm interested in hearing personal stories about demotion. I personally have never heard anyone being officially demoted. It's either getting sacked, or "lateral promotion"

I personally haven't been, but have whitnessed it plenty of times. Often, they don't call it a demotion, but it's obvious to everyone that it is. They may hire some one over the person to do the same work, they may suddenly move the person to a "new and important" position when in fact it is neither new or more important. Also, they can lower your pay, but if a company does that, they're either so financially strapped they're asking you to take the pay cut to help them out or they pretty much want you to leave but are afraid to fire you.

Unless you have violated a rule or law of the company, you can be demoted but I don't think that they can lower your pay.

If you did, in their view, violate some rule, usually they would fire you or give you the option to resign. I guess it is possible that they could offer you a lesser position with lower pay but you would have to agree to this. I don't think they can do anything else.
