Will the washing machine still work properly if they are defective? Would it agitate properly?

If the motor coupling is bad, the washer will not go into a spin cycle... It will still be able to drain the water out of the machine, but will not spin the tub... I'm not sure what you mean by agitation coupler, because there is no such thing... But there is whats called agitator dogs that part of your agitator itself... These are little tear shaped plastic pieces that are inside of the agitator... They act as ratchets, and this what makes the auger part of your agitator work... If these go bad, the auger part of the agitator won't work...

possible, but not for long. If they are defective, there would be excessive noise. Clanking growling chattering, something. Also the agitator may be loose. You should not be able to move it side to side (the whole inner tub moving is fine) and you should not be able to lift it up and down
