its the old fashion way of stating you are in a relationship with someone, back in the 50/60's i believe, girls would wear a guy's class ring around their neck, for example

i couldn't tell you where it comes from, but it can mean a lot of different things. the ring might not fit your finger, you might not want to wear it on your finger, you could show it off better around your neck, etc.
do whatever you think looks good!

My (ex) mother in law put her wedding ring on a chain after her husband died because she wanted to keep it but it was too tight on her finger, and he passed!!!
