If you believe that, get yourself over to Heathrow Airport - they're in dire need of somebody able to knit fog so that they can then pull it out of the way and get the planes moving in time for Christmas!

You are right. This lottery biz is a scam.
The person who responds is deluged with further emails asking to submit a deposit in order to pick up the lottery winnings. Well you know what happens next!
No money!
So stay away from those scams as well as people writing emails caliming you are going to inherit money from Nigeria or somewhere. Those are also scams
Look at the link I provided..

Yep, you are correct.
It's called 'Identity Theft'.
It starts when you reply to the mail (this confirms that they have your real eMail address and maybe now they have your name as well).
With your name they look up your address and social security number. This information is all it takes to apply for Loans, Credit Cards and Bank accounts (all in your name).
Of course it's simpler if you give them your existing Bank Account details "so they can transfer your prize money"
Ho Ho Ho - the only 'transfer' you will ever see is all your money leaving the account :-)
Take it from me = you will NEVER EVER win a 'lottery' that you NEVER ACTUALLY ENTERED.
At the best it's just some scum Marketing scam designed to 'target' you with over priced products you don't need and can't afford .. at worst it's organized crime deciding if it's worth kidnapping your kids ...

It's a scam.
Any time you win a lottery you didn't enter, it's a scam.
Any time someone asks you for personal details (or even more so money) to collect a lottery win when they approached you, it's a BIG scam.
