That's exactly why they do it. To get on your nerves. Nothing gets past you. Congratulations on blowing the lid on the "R" conspiracy.

I've been told by someone living in the USA that there are parts of Appalachia where people do this. For example, they'll mispronounce the word "wash" as worrrrsh.
In Australia, we have the opposite habit. Or, at least, some Aussies do (women do it the most). We silence the final R on words like "car," so that it sounds like ka. I drove the ka to work.

It's generally ok to be annoyed by certain idiosyncrasies that people have. And depending on who the person is to you, you probably will just have to accept it as the way they talk. It's not ok when you act upon them, like in this particular situation, start a fight (verbal or physical). Some people just do it out of habit. Like mis-using words or spelling them incorrectly, it's just common mistakes.

i have a southern accent and now living in the midwest i notice my words have more of an R sound sometimes when i speak. Its just the way i talk. If i can deal with the accents and stuff up here you can deal with r's.

It seems that people try to provoke others who appear to be easy targets. Move to New Joisey. Most of those people do not use 'Rs'
Wherever you have a raw spot, people will pick.
The best advice is to toughen up.

Not paranoid, it is very unnerving. Some peoples "accents", enunciation of some words. I agree.

Well if I understand you correctly, for example people say "Warsh" and not "Wash"... I think that's just something they've got stuck saying... they don't necessarily do it to get on your nerves. It bugs me too.

i don't think people do this to get on your nerves. i think it may be their accent.
for instance, i'm from the south and i quite often use y'all instead of you all.

Do you live in New England? Their mouths are rotten with auxillary "R"s.
