I was there when it was supposed to land. They had both lanes of traffic going into the landing site. When people heard over the radio that the winds had cancelled the landing, everyone started heading out, in both lanes! It was a chaotic mess! I understand they spent weeks getting all the gypsum particles out of the shuttle (White Sands isn't sand, afterall).
