Well- the cop out is a gift certificate... but that seems so impersonal sometimes.
I'd give him love & respect, since that's really what the holiday is about ...right? A personal note with some of your best memories with him, and maybe a nice framed pic of you and he for his desk is a nice way to tell him what he means to you.

Get him something useful.
One year I bought my father a plastic bucket and loaded it with car soap, a sponge, glass cleaner, Armor-all, wax, and a chamoise - everything useful for cleaning the car and it was cheap.
He pretty much had everything, so I chose useful things as a gift, and he really appreciated it.
Or if he likes to read, you could buy him a book, say on sports or hunting, whatever he's into, or even a magazine subscription.
Parents appreciate the thoughtful little things!

Have a really lovely picture of him and youre mother enlarged and while the store is doing this, choose a lovely frame. Frames cost very little and yet look really nice! Its a gift that will keep him happy all year round and beyond. You can always choose a picture of you and him to get enlarged!!!! He will love it. Guarnteed!
