well one con of a six speed is you have to shift more. But the good thing is you can use the max torque range of an engine more times when you are accelerating. An engine does not have the same torque out put at every rpm. It moves up to the rated rpm where it achieve maximum torque, then the torque output is actually less as the engine increases in rpm. Thus it can not accelerate at the same rate, so you shift and get back into that max torque range so you can get max acceleration again. It doesn't quite work that way, because a higher gear has less mechanical advantage, but that is basically it.

The difference is that a 5 speed is a 4 speed with overdrive.
a 6 speed is a 4 speed with 2 overdrives, The advantage is gas mileage and power band control. The more gears, the better control in the hills and in a race condition. You can keep the motor putting out max HP under a wider variety of conditions.
The pros and cons. the pros are obvious, more control and most likely top end. The cons, You are shifting more, Cost, Size and If you fix your own stuff, harder, but not much.

The extra gear gives you a better highway gear which equates to lower RPMs and better fuel economy. With more gears you also have a greater range of selection, and the gear ratios per gear can be more equally distributed to their desired application.
We have a 2006 Liberty with a 6-speed and a 2002 Libby with a 5. I personally haven't noticed much difference, but I really haven't closely expiremented. I think I like the 5 speed better as far as the shifting goes, but when you get used to the 6 speeds, and drive the 5 speed, its like you want to shift into 6 after 5th, but its not there.

On both the top gear is overdrive. The more gears you have, the closer together the ratios. When pulling heavy loads you don't have rev up the engine so high to get to the next gear.
Most 5 speeds have a wider ratio between 1 & 2. Both have about 2 too many gears for normal driving when not carrying a load.

The gameboy improve SP is plenty greater valuable. It has a backlit demonstrate screen it is in a position to be grew to become off any time for the time of gameplay, as there's a small button on it. It folds down for straightforward storage. yet, in case you have been going to purchase her one, i could unquestionably propose buying her a Nintendo DS. they're a much greater valuable deal and that they are in a position to play all varieties of video games, including video games from the gameboy improve (SP). yet of the two i could definately purchase the SP edition. that's plenty greater good and could final longer, and you will play it in the lifeless of nighttime. however the Nintendo DS is a much greater valuable deal. i'm an electronics tester and the nintendo DS became plenty greater valuable than the gameboy improve or the SP. It even worked greater valuable than the greater modern-day variations, the DS lite and the DS drk. It tops approximately $one hundred and you will additionally purchase it used at E.B. video games or Gamestop. wish that helped. wish your sister chuffed birthday for me!

Short and simple

5-speed
----------------
less shifting
better gas mielage (not by that much)
longer gears
good on highways and stuff
easier maintnance

6-speed
------------------
shorter gears
more frequent shifting
maintnance is a little more difficult
better on the track

If you're gonna be racing or sliding i would reccomend the 6 speed but if you're just deciding on a car to get for every day driving the 5-speed would be more convenient.

You've got more gear options as you drive. This would make a difference if you're driving, uh, "enthusiastically." It would make less of a difference if you drive "prudently."

I'm not even sure it makes sense on the new Corvette, since the motor has tons of torque and revs pretty high, and therefore shifts aren't a critical. It might impress people tho...
