Well her body may just release more eggs during a monthly cycle then most women. (we release one egg) also people who have a increased risk to have twins are... african americans, mutiple pregnancies(meaning the times you've been pregnant),age(the older you are the more of a chance),heavier women, and also women who eat yams.(they have a link to twin births). Hope this gives you some answers. Tell her Congrats on her little ones! and children are a blessing!!

There are two types of twinning -- monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal) twins. The frequency of identical twins across the world is approximately one set per 250 births and is generally not dependent on race, heredity, age nor parity (number of pregnancies). Ovulation induction doubles the incidence of this type of twinning.

Fraternal twin conception is influenced by race, heredity, maternal age, parity and, especially, fertility drugs. Regarding heredity, the mother is most responsible for this. In one study, women who themselves were fraternal twins gave birth to twins at a rate of one set per 126 pregnancies. In another study, one mother of twins out of every 25 (four percent) was also a twin, but only one out of 60 (just under two percent) of their fathers was a twin.

As maternal age and parity increase, so does the incidence of twinning. There is also a tendency for fraternal twins to repeat in families. If the firstborn are twins of this type, you are about five times more likely to repeat twinning with the next pregnancy than would be true in the general population.

They dont have to run in your family to have twins. Once you have fraternal twins you are more likely to have them again. This is because your body releases more than one egg during ovulation. Identical twins are a fluke of nature so it does not increase your chances. If she doesn't want anymore then she should use birth control.

Twins don't necessarily have to "run in the family." It's a spontaneous thing so your friend could definitely have twins and no one in her family ever will again.

Here is a message board with some info on other women that have had twins that didn't run in the family:

they may run in the family, just way way back. also its more common than people think to conceive twins but a lot of the time one is stronger and basically takes the life of the other, weaker one, and then just absorbs its left overs. i know, that does sounds disgusting. a few other possibilities are that she is over ovulating (fraternal twins would result), her husband has a lot of strong sperm (2 sperm fertilizing one egg = identical twins) or both!
good luck :-)

If they are fraternal twins, she's quite possibly releasing two eggs when she ovulates.

And, no, overweight women are not more likely to have twins. That's silly. Older women are more likely to release multiple eggs so, yes, they are more likely to have fraternal twins. And fertility meds only increase the chance of having twins slightly. Now, if someone is undergoing IVF, the chances increase dramatically because more than one embryo is being implanted.

Twins occur when the egg separates fully, and there's still research being done to see how two sets of twins end up in a family. My grandmother became pregnant with twins twice in a row, but lost one the second time around. It's still a mystery how she managed to conceive them twice.
