The KGB was dissolved when the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991, but it was brought back as the FSB. It still does many of the original KGB roles (but I assume less spying since relations with Russia are much better these days).

Putin (the russian president) was a member of the KGB. The KGB was disbanded with the Soviet union however. Nowadays the Russian inteligence agencies are the FSB (Federal Security Service), the GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate) and the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service. The FSB are sometimes described as secret police, much like the KGB. The GRU was founded in 1918 by Lenin, but it was always fiercely independent from even the Communist party. The SVR is the successor to the KGB in that it deals with foreign affairs - essentially spying. The FSB and the SVR both have ex KGB members running them, and presumably hundreds within the agency itself.

It's the FSB now. Probably still has KGB types and actions. For the most part it's a different agency now though.

There are ex-KGB all over Russia still, though.

I would think so. The KGB was too powerful to be gone completely. I agree that its probably just using a different name now,

Yes, they are called the "FSB".

Lately they've gotten tons of press after a few poisonings of various people, notably Viktor Yushchenko in the Ukraine (he lived, but is disfigured) and Alexander Litvinenko in the UK (he died an awful death).
