It's a phallic arrow pointing towards the man's mysterious masculinity.
In other words... it's a big ****...
It works 'sort of' the same way as high heels for women.
This is why only men and not boys usually wear ties.
How the tie works in the professional world is that it says, "Hey look at me! I am a mature masculine man!" So it conveys strength and confidence in the male's nature which translates into more respect in the business world. But it communicates it in an abstract way as to not offend anyone.

It has been suggested that the tie is a scaled-down version of the collars that medieval people wore to identify themselves with whatever group they are in. Sort of makes sense, even now-a-days.

Its a formal accessory, personally I find it dashing if worn with the right clothing. Adds color to the outfit and no bare chest on display at meetings or in the office I guess.

Don't know about others, but I wear a tie to keep my collar closed and keep food off my shirt when eating sloppily. It also hides food spots and smudges on my shirt.

I think it started out as an easy way to have something to wipe your mouth with and eventually morphed into what it is today.
