I used to suffer with anaemia - acutely - and I took iron pills/tonic too .... I found that after a while this 'diet' made me put on weight and generally feel heavy and sluggish .... a friend suggested brewers yeast - either in powder or tablet form as an additional support to the iron supplement ... they contain all the B vitamins, including B12 .... taken regularly they help to re-adjust the body's deficiencies and get everything ticking over as it should ..... you might want to consider taking sea kelp and iodine supplements too ..... check out any booklet (found at most health food stores) that give details and explain about vitamins and minerals and how the body uses these and which are more favourable for specific areas ie the skin, hair, nails, nerve function, brain function, digestion etc. etc. ... I 'discovered' this wonderful world after a car crash in 1989 ... despite doctor's who basically said there was nothing they could do for my post traumatic stress/disorder, my depression, my sleeplessness, my anxieties, my worries, my embarrassment over bodily functions and so on, who said '.... we don't believe in these supplements, a 'normal' diet should give you everything you need ... it's just one of those things - live with it ....' by making efforts to help myself, I now have these same doctors sitting down with me and saying '... according to our files you shouldn't have .... how come you've got hair again?.... your levels have balanced out now .....'

I wish you well .....

Vitamin C helps it to properly absorb. I am on supplements now, and that is what I was told by my doctor to do. Also, avoid caffeine, as it can PREVENT the absorption into your system.

There is actually a Stress B Complex (I can't remember who makes it) that has Vitamin C and Iron in it. I take that so I cover all my bases since I am chronically anemic.

If you drink a small glass of pure orange juice with your main meal it helps to absorb iron. I know this doesnt answer the question you asked, but I've been aneamic too and this really worked!!!!
Good luck, happy Christmas and keep well
