Don't pay attention to the brand. You need to visit a shoe store that will watch you walk, run and squat to see what type of feet and gait you have and they can inform you on the type of shoe that will fit you correctly. Many times people buy shoes because of the brand but it is not the right shoe for their feet.

If you have a Fleet Feet Sports in your area they are good at fitting you, otherwise, try some of the better known sport/shoe stores and they may fit people or know who does. If they do not know, try a local track coach, that is how I found out who to speak to about my shoes.

Good luck and take it easy starting out.

Not all shoes of one brand are the same. It also depends on your feet. I personally like adidas, but that might not be the one for you. When I am looking for shoes, I usually make sure that it's not too heavy and that it's comfortable for me. If adidas is a little too much to buy, try going to a Big5 sporting goods. There, they have a variety of running shoes that are not too expensive and are good for beginners. If you are talking about the ones w/ spikes, nike and adidas are probably a good choice.

One brand does not fit all any more than one size does not fit all. If you will be doing mostly running or jogging go for a name brand that is comfortable as soon as you put it on. If you will be doing more walking and some jogging to work yourself up then go with a cross-trainer first then a running shoe.
