I believe that no matter where you reside, be it the Middle East, China, or the United States the vast majority of the people only wish for an opportunity for a good job and a safe place to raise their kids.

Furthermore, while the majority population may be religious I think most would agree that their religion does not have an absolute monopoly on the truth, that people who do not believe what they do will not necessarily be damned for eternity, that there is room for peaceful co-existence, and ultimately that a persons actions are much more important then their words or professed beliefs.

Assuming this is true, and the majority of the population feels this way, how can you leverage these people and beliefs into true political and social change?

jbtascam: This applies to those only concerned with survival as well. It doesn't have to be about world changing - it can be about community changing.

The point is that the majority of the population of the world really only wishes for an opportunity for a decent job (that can provide money for food, shelter, etc.) and a safe place to raise their kids. If this is the primary concern of the majority of people how do we leverage the strength of those numbers to end conflicts and work towards social and economic progress...

You can't, because your assumptions are built upon a Western Mindset that is not valid.

The Majority of people in the world spend way more time on "survival" and have insufficient time to worry about the rest of the world.

It's only the pampered West, where leisure hours almost outnumber working hours, that we believe people have not only time but an obligation to "change the world."

The world you're basing your "assumptions" on does not exist.

Make them passionate about something. Without passion people will not act.... but as soon as they are passionate about something they are no longer a moderate. So there might be a bit of a problem with your proposal.
