Wow, that last post was an advertisement out of a magazine if I ever did read one.
Montreal is best known for its FOOD. However, being that you're from New York, you may have trouble accepting the fact that our city has the best eats on the continent. Sample a Montreal bagel, and just TRY to tell me that a New York bagel is better :)
In any case, you will want to visit the Tourist Office on Dorchester Square, just south of the intersection of Peel and Ste Catherine Street. They will be able to tell you what the holiday operating hours of all of the tourist attractions in the city are. Then, I would suggest a walk around Old Montreal. The sights, shops, and museums will keep you busy for the good part of the day. The Biodome is another fun daytime activity...easily accessible by Metro.
As for New Year's Eve, you definitely want to head to St-Laurent street and steer clear of Crescent Street. That is, of course, if you want to distinguish yourself from the other drunk, boorish, unruly American tourists. You'll meet a lot of locals, pay a lot less cover, and have a much better time at pretty much any club on St-Laurent. Just walk the stretch between Sherbrooke and Laurier streets until you find a locale that tickles your fancy.
Have a great time!
