We use a third party to host our pop and smpt server. They are saying its on our end. They said that port 110 is likely blocked. I checked the server (win2k server) and nothing has changed. So I am guessing hte problem is that the router is somehow blocking port 110. But before i check the router, is there any service that is/is not running on my win2k server box that could be prohibited access to port 110 or the incoming pop email?

Are you using your Win2K server as a gateway? It sounds like your router is the gateway, so that eliminates your server as the problem. Chances are your router or internet service provider is causing the problem.

From any client, try to telnet to the POP3 server on port 110. From a command prompt, type the following

telnet 110

where is the FQDN of the POP3 server.

Press Enter.

You should see the login to the POP3 server. If you don't, try pinging it. If it won't ping, work that first. If it does but you can't telnet to it, there's something wrong on their end.

For the SMTP server you should be using your ISP's smart host, NOT the SMTP server of the mail service provider. Most ISPs now block SMTP traffic that does not go through their servers. Whatever you are using for SMTP, you can verify it the same way you verified the POP3 setup -- just telnet to the server on port 25.

OK, you say as of yesterday there have been no emails coming in. Where there before? If so I don't think it would be a port issue because you would have had this problem before. Have you installed any new software on the system? Any new anti-spam software or anything like that? If you have, uninstall it or disable it and see if you start getting email. I would start out with this first. I always hate having to turn a firewall into Swiss cheese by opening ports everywhere. Good Luck.
