If you don't have Windows or don't want to use Charmap (see below), you can use this site:

http://www.atm.ox.ac.uk/user/iwi/charmap.html

If you know the symbol's universal code you can type it in by holding down the ALT key and typing the 4 digit number and releasing the alt key.

For example:
ä is ALT-0228

You can also use the character mapper program in Windows located in Start Menu -> Program Files -> Accessories -> System Tools menu.

In microsoft word you go to the Insert menu at the top of the window, click on it and then click on insert symbol. A window will open with all of the symbols available for the font that you're using.

If the symbol you want isn't there, in the upper left hand corner of the Insert Symbol window, you'll be able to change the font set you're viewing (without changing the font in your document) and look through each set for the symbol you want.

Once you find the symbol you want click on it and click on the Insert buttonat the lower left corner of the window.

It's a good idea to download some free symbol fonts to make sure you'll have all the symbols you might need.

Easy thing to do is go to a German website and copy them to a Word doc and save that. Next time you need them, just pull of that word doc and copy from there.

Or go into Word. Insert - Symbol and search for them there.
