yes they are a very good pet...hardy, friendly with great personalities....you should be involved with helping with care....make your child do most of it...just check periodically to make sure the needs are met....although most pet stores sell sand for substrate I would go with aspen pine instead since they can ingest the sand....I did not like reptiles until I met my hubby and we have had many reptiles, we presently have lizards, snakes and turtles......also put some hand sanitizer in his stocking and just tell him to use it after each handling and you should be fine...the beardeds are my favorite reptile....just a great pet.

I am 10 too! I hav recently aquirred a bearded dragon, a hachtling. My little guy is a great pet, they don't require a lot of work! have a 20 gallon high, log, heat lamp, bubbling wter dish, and the beardie. It's good 2 buy them as hatchlings and watch them grow, plus they are cheaper. They eat about 15 crickets a day and the eat veggies when over 1 year old! they are very interactive and will sometimes lick your finger! they r gr8 pets for young children and are NOT too much care

Yes, only if you are prepared to help take care of it. I have a 7yo and a 14yo and we have 2 beardies and a leopard gecko. You do have to spend a bit for a good set up and make sure you get the proper lighting and know about what they can and can not eat. They are not as easy pets as fish, cats and dogs. We were feeding the beardie the wrong veggies and not giving him enough calcium and he almost died. You have to be careful about the substrate in the cage because they could get impacted from ingesting it and die. Go to a reputable pet shop for care instructions. You also have to feed it live bugs and crickets which took me a while to get used to. A great website for care and set up is www.beautifuldragons.com

If you are willing to help your 10 year old.. yes, they can be great pets. They are not as easy to take care of though as most people think. They require a very strict diet. Daily vegetables, some fruit and also protein (crickets) Mealworms should be avoided because the hard outer shell can cause impaction in beardeds.
They also need UV lighting and Calcium added to their food..(not enough, or too much and it can cause problems)

You can check this website for nutrition information. It lists everything they should eat daily, occasionally, never.

I was scared of them when I first saw them, my 7 year old was getting the googly eyes every time we went to the pet store to get snake food. Finally the store owner, a friend, was tired of me acting "irrational", she picked up a male and attached it to my chest. It looked up at me and put its head on my chest, and rested there. It was surprisingly cool to say the least, and I kinda want one myself.. But we've done research, and with a little help from you, it should be very easy to manage. They are expensive at first... We figured it would take around 200.00 to get it started up here and own one... Good luck...

yes but be prepared for some start-up expenses:
tank/lid size depends on size of beardie
substate
food- crickets fruit veggies meal worms pinkies wax worms
lights/uvb-uva
heat pad under tank
logs/sticks to climb on
some thing to hide under

and about 15 years or more to look after they live a long time

bearded dragons are not suitable for beginners.geckos are the easiest lizards to care for. if you wanted to get a lizard for him/her then you could research on lizards or maybe a particular lizard. i recommend going on google because there are lots of very good websites to look at.
