Someone just asked me this the other day when it came on the radio. It's a very good question. I'm not sure there's a definitive answer. I guess Christmas is a time when we think about what all of our favorite things are, because we want them as gifts. But, you are right, in it's place in the Sound of Music it has nothing to do with Christmas.

i don't think it is a "christmas song" but it might be linked in many peoples' minds as the film is shown over the christmas holidays WITHOUT FAIL.

It talks about snow . . . Snow . . .Christmas . . .I can see the relation. It's about gifts too.
