Post offices everywhere are helping Santa answer his mail

WASHINGTON — Santa is a popular guy. Kids, young and old, love the white-bearded wonder. That popularity translates into a lot of cards and letters at this time of year.
Due to the heavy volume of mail and his busy schedule, Santa needs help answering the letters. That's where the Postal Service — and volunteers — come in.
In New York City, the Operation Santa Program kicked off Tuesday at the James Farley Post Office. New York District Manager Vinnie Malloy and Santa opened the program by reading letters addressed to everybody's favorite North Pole resident.
Many of the letters are written by children in need, such as this one: "My name is Jessica. I am seven years old. I'm writing to you because I live with my grandma and my mother is in prison."
Last year the New York Post Office received more than 200,000 letters. Volunteers answered many of those. This year's total has already reached 119,000.
Many other cites have Letters to Santa programs. In Chicago, the local Fox affiliate will be airing 15 segments where a letter carrier reads letters to Santa.
In New York City, Letters to Santa are on display at the James Farley Post Office, located at 421 8th Avenue. Customers also can call 1-877-840-0459 during business hours to receive a letter to answer.
In Chicago, Letters to Santa are on display at the Cardiss Collins Facility, 433 West Harrison, second floor retail lobby. Or local customers can call 312-983-8293.
There are other Letters to Santa programs throughout the country. Check with your local post office.

At least some of them have become part of a project called Arctic Phenomenon designed by the University of Lapland to study the letters written to Santa. Some are saved for posterity, like the letter written on birch bark by two Polish schoolboys that is now proudly displayed in the wall of the Santa Claus Main Post Office, located on the Arctic Circle in Lapland.
Many more letters, however, become part of a volunteer project at local post offices called Operation Santa Claus. This project started in the '20s in the New York Post Office. Touched by the numerous letters to Santa they received, postal clerks in the branch answered many of the letters, digging into their own pockets to send presents to the children who wrote.
If your local post office does not participate in Operation Santa Claus, more than likely the letters are just thrown away.
For those that DEFINITELY want an answer from Santa... you can send your letters, anytime of the year, to:
Santas Mailbag
Santa Claus Lane
North Pole, Alaska 99705
Make sure you remember to put the stamp on!

The put up workplace can't create an envelope for you. However the put up workplace myself and my husband paintings at looks after Santa letters to youngsters. When the service choices up a Santa letter, or one is mailed on the counter probably the most staff reply the letter and ship it again out earlier than Christmas. The staff purchase the desk bound it's written on.Its lovely functional. Of path we are living in a smaller the city so its no longer like there is one hundred's of letters coming in.

i use to work for the post office..... every letter gets answered with a returned letter to the kids that give return addresses. Sometimes you get pictures and candy in the letters the pictures are posted in the the processing plant on a cork board. The letters are stored in lettertainers for a few years then disposed of or shredded just in case we receive a letter from the parent asking to return the Santa letter. I have a copy of the letter saved on my computer so I can give one to my kids every year and save all their letters for when they are older. If you would like a copy of the letter for your child send me a message i will email it to you!
~~~ Happy Holidays~~~
Some parents address the envelope to North Pole, NY which is a vacation spot in upstate NY. It is designed to look like what a kid would imagine it to look like. You can tour Santa's House, the post office and see reindeer.
In Chicago, the post office has started a volunteer program. The letters are sorted by by zip code and demographics, and put on display. Anyone who provides a photo id can pick a kid and buy them gifts.
