First, if it's a standard size wter heater, you have to figure out if it's the top element or the bottom.
Shut off the incoming water supply.
Shut off the power to the water heater.
Remove the access panel covering the heating element.
Disconnect the wires to the element.
Unwrap and have at the ready, the replacement element.
Now, very quickly, unscrew the old element and screw in the new one. If you're fast, you will not lose any water from the tank.
Reconnect the wires to the new element.
Take a dry towel and dry the area around the seal of the new element.
Look for any amount of leakage.
No leakage, turn back on the water and then the power.
Replace the access panel

If there is leakage, try tightening the element a little more, dry again with a towel and check again.

Warning, if you are not very fast about changing out the new for the old element, you may end up with about twenty five gallons of water on the floor. Once that water starts to flow, it's almost imossible to get the new element in before the tank runs dry.

Turn off the power to the water heater and then drain it , after it has drained remove the face plate that covers the elements and then remove the elements ,install the new elements and then refill the tank ,make sure the tank is full before you turn the power back on or the new elements will blow out . after tank is full turn pwer back on then 1/2 hr 45 min later you will have hot water.
