Not if you suffer from depression!

And please realize that while talk therapy is often very helpful, if your brain has a chemical imbalance which is causing your depression, all the talk in the world won't help until the imbalance is treated.

For many people, seeing a therapist regularly is an important part of the treatment for depression, but Kat is mistaken that it is always necessary. Some people just need the meds.

(Isn't it funny that no one ever mentions how hard it is for a diabetic to quit taking insulin, or suggests that it is "escapism" for a heart patient to rely on his beta blockers to keep things working properly? Don't listen to such garbage, and seek the treatment you need. The brain is an organ, too.)

Not if you need them, but taking pills won't help you any if you don't a) get some therapy and talk about why your depressed and how to change it, and b) want to change. That's the most important. You have to want to be happy and different if you want the pills to work. I would try therapy first and see if that helps before you take the pills.

No, if you are suffering with clinical depression, it needs to be treated. And that can be a combination of both anti-depressants and psychotherapy. I started taking anti-depressants when I was 17 and they helped immensely. HTH : )

In my opinion, yes, absolutely. Nobody knows what those pills do for sure, and nobody knows what the long term effects are, nor do they know how it affects development. But they do know that the drugs are difficult to quit - some have a really bad withdrawal syndrome. In my opinion, unless you literally cannot function for a significant period of time, taking drugs for it is one, two, or all of bad judgment, escapism, and self-destructive.
