Just looking at your answers made me shudder. It may depend on the category - with a specialist subject you may get higher quality answers. I asked a question in the anthropology section, and gots lots of answers, all of them sensible, and all spelled correctly. So perhaps it is down to education. People are in a hurry, and they don't pay attention to detail. I even let one of my answers through with a spelling mistake the other day, and it's my job to be pedantic. Slapdash is catching, see?!

I wonder if other languages have the same problem? I can't see the French using bad spelling, somehow. Too much pride in their language. I suppose we just don't care.

I went to school, and am still in college right now. But i'm at work, not supposed to be on this and people walk by all the time and it scares me, and so i dont re-read much of it. I just type fast (I can type an amazing 70 words a minute) and just hope it turns out right.

Most of the time I'm looking at the screen anyways and I catch my mistakes.

Otherwise it's some 15 year old little kid who can't spell. :):)

Young people are acting stupidly and older people are partially (functionally) illiterate. In my short lifetime I have seen standards plummet to a horrible acceptable low. The only people on television who try to consistently speak correctly are news stations and news shows.
I believe our schools have finally managed to fail the students (as have the parents failed their children) and the true illiteracy is now masked behind a make-believe teen Ebonics in which people use "UR" as you're (and your and yore too, probably) and "4" as for and "i" as I and "no" as Know etc. It is NOT about texting and "this isn't a thesis" and such, its a mask that hides the real fact that no one can spell nor use proper grammar and punctuation anymore.
It alarms me. These are our leaders of tomorrow.

Our school gave up on teaching spelling and grammar a number of years ago. Kids don't care.

I read a lot of job applications from people who can't get spelling right even there.

I know what you mean... It is very annoying.

I've gotten several violations because I get a bit sarcastic in my answers.

The problem is partly caused by the Internet and instant messaging. To get it typed in and entered faster, there are things left out of it - letters from some words, punctuation and sentence structure to name a few. If there's a rhyme with a number (ne1, 2, 4, gr8), that's used instead.

I've been wondering, does the "internet-ese" take over in the brain for how something is spelt? I bet there are people that really believe these things are correct...

I'd really love to see a school essay or something else that is non internet from these people. Do they actually take those few extra seconds to write out another few letters, put in some punctuation and have an understanding of sentence structure?

Just think, one of them is going to be our president some day. But then again, that person doesn't write his (or her) own speeches... we just have to elect someone that knows how to "read" a speech with an incredible amount of junk in it.

But I guess if everyone in the government knows that wut means wut, idk means idk, ne1 means ne1, da means da, and on and on and on then we should be okay.... I think

Seriously lighten up. chill out! lay back and relax, what the hell difference does it make if it spelt correct or grammatically correct, as long as it's either helpful or funny.

The problem is no student left behind. You have problems with the good students being dragged down. Maybe it's should be called the Dumbing of America.
