Many ancient cultures celebrated mid-winters day. They had survived the worst of the winter and as the season turned (the days got longer) they could stop rationing their stocks of food. Feasts were held which involved eating, drinking, merriment and probably general debauchery.

The early Christian church realised that rather than force the pagans to give up their festivals they would try to redirect the focus (They also did this with Easter and All Hallows Day). Instead of worshipping the fact that the days would now get longer and summer would return, we will celebrate the birth of Christ. Hence the name.

Due to redrafting of calenders over the centuries, Christmas is now celebrated on December 25th rather than Dec 21st (Happy Solstice).

It is therefore obvious that Christmas is traditionally a time for eating, drinking etc. which has been hijacked by the religious. Modern society, without realising it, has taken it back.

Happy holidays

It's about celebrating our salvation through Christ our God. "Do not be scared. For I bring you good tidings of great joy. For a savior has been born in Bethlehem, city of David. And they shall call Him Emmanuel." It's all about him. By the way, eat, drink, and be merry technically IS in the Bible, but when the person said that, Jesus called him a fool. Jesus says that our work is never done and we should not "eat, drink, and be merry".

Christmas is about whatever you believe in, in your heart.

It can be numerous things, Jesus's b-day, a time to see family, to drink be happy and merry with them.... then after x-mas... get drunk for new years eve and eat me some black eyed peas!

To me it is in this order

1. Spending time with loved ones
2. Giving gifts (never receiving)
3. Remembering Jesus and religion

It is many different things to many different people. Most would have you believe its about Santa, or gifts, or misseltoe, or even Christs birthday. Mostly, it doesnt seem to matter what the true origins are, just what they are to you, now, today.

I cant honestly tell you if you go back in factual history, and do the research and legwork required to find these things out, it has absolutely nothing to do with God.

It was originally about the birth of Jesus Christ but as people heard and celebrated the meaning soon changed i guess.
