since you are asking this in a video game section, i'll answer such Q in a manner that best fit this section.
1. If you need a boyfriend, try to go to a social event or hang out more with couple of people that shares your interest. Like in RPG, almost always you start waking up from your room. and the quest will begin as soon as you get out from the house. After a while, you are bound to meet sidekicks that shares a COMMON GOAL.
Usually, not always, romance start to sparks along the journey. Check out Squall and Rinoa, Yuna and Tidus, and the other success stories.
Perhaps, start looking while you shopped for video games at EB or Gamestop. Who knows you might find one that sparks your interest (although, i would suggest you go to someplace else first).
2. He is the right guy for you, only when he knows how to differentiate between fantasy and reality. If the dude remembers more about Zelda's birthday than yours, chances are that guy is NOT for you. ALso, the guy who is too obsessive only on one thing always end up dead or lunatic in the end (Sephiroth, kefka, too name a few). They might be cool.. but they almost always become a threat to universe (in this case, your universe).
Also, start making a list (keep it secret, offcourse). Just like FF12, you required to have loots in order to concoct special weapon or armors that suits you the best in your journey saving the world. So, make a list of what kind of guy that will suits you better in your life journey (saving the world is an optional quest).
Just like in game, cheating literally destroys all the fun.
Don't date guys who cheat too much. Just like gameshark ultimately destroys your console, so does cheating to your relationship. Check the guy first.
Unfortunately, there is a big disparity between game and real life. Is that you don't have a memory card for your relationship. If you screw up, you can't just reset your life and start from the point you save. There is however a chance to start over from the beginning.
Don't fret if it's happened. Because, unlike game, real life offers you new expansion pack everyday (it is always new experience everyday. Offcourse, sometimes life has glitches too.. perhaps that's how you get the dejavu feeling)
3. In RPG, when you don't know what to say or do, find a clue from your environment. You can ask the locals for hints of the things he like. If you find the person in a video game store, chances are he knows a thing or two about video game. Why don't you start by asking from that angle.
PS: it's okay to sometimes fail. Because, the more you beat the monster the more experience point you get and the stronger you become.

All I can tell you is that I know a guy isn't the right guy if I am still interested in other guys, or I get annoyed by him. Gosh your question is pretty difficult to answer. I suggest saying what's in your heart. If that pushes him away, then he wasn't the right guy. Try and take your time with things, rushing to find Mr. Right will probably only get you the wrong guy. Wish I could be more helpful, but i'm pretty confused about the whole guy thing too.

"i need a boyfriend" - Then get one. Ask guys on dates until one of them says yes. Then keep dating them until you become a couple. Then you will have a boyfriend. BTW you don't really NEED one, you just want one.
"okay how do i know if he is the right guy" - Well you don't really. But if you have to ask, he probably is not. It's like asking if you've just had an orgasm. If you have just had one, then you know about it.

If you want to get a boyfriend, you have to make sure it's someone you REALLY like first. There cant be any, 'Well I KINDA like him.' or anything like that. Second of all, you need to do something called, 'the approach'. Just go up to him & tell him how u feel about him. And if you're lucky, he may even kiss you on the first date!! But don't expect it.
But....how does this belong in the, 'Games & Recreation' section? It should belong in, 'Singles & Dating'.
