Just purchased a 95 Olds Silhouette, 3800 engine, 4t60e auto trans. The trans wont go into gear. Any gear. I put the selector in reverse, the reverse lights come on, but no gear. The engine lowers its idle a little when put into a gear, but have no motion. Tried spiking the gas in reverse and drive hoping it was vacuum problem, didnt go in. Not sure where to go from here. Transmission flush? Maybe something is stuck? I have checked the fluid, it is full (perhaps a little over), and the linkage is attached and working. I am unfamiliar with this trans, so i dont know what common things cause this. The van has 136000 miles. Thanks in advance for any help!

Usually, usually if a fuse is blown in a 4t60E, it will at least go into 'limp-in' mode. This means it (the tranny) will operate in second/third gear(in d-3) if this is not happening, and the tranny will not 'pull' at all, it is probably trashed. If the shift solonoid(s) are the culprit (There are four of them, any combination may be bad) it is still a rather major job to fix, requiring the steering rack, subframe, and engine/transmission to be 'dropped' in order to repair. This may cost as much as $700.00-$1000.00+ to fix. I do not wish to discourage you, but I feel you should know this. * note-- unless all the shift solonoids are bad at once. the solonoids are probably not the problem, the reaction carrier is most likely the culprit-transmission rebuild/replace. Oh, make sure the shift selector is properly adjusted, and operating properly at the tranny, the reverse lights may come on, even though the linkage is not properly operating the tranny shift lever.

You broke the reaction shell inside the transmission. Every 4T60E or 4L60E (RWD Trans.) Has this problem. It's a bad design from the factory. You will need a transmission overhaul to fix. They make an updated reaction shell to prevent this from happening again. Hope this helps!

The most you can do is to check all of the fuses to make sure you don't have a blown fuse, these transmissions are all ele and don't require any vacuum to run, it probably is the electric shift solenoid but you can also check the electric plug on the trans to make sure that it is getting connection. hope this helps. have a Merry Christmas.

The tranny is trash. It may just be a failed torque converter, but you're pretty much going to have to rebuild/replace the tranny.

Now, it could be other things. You could have bad or varnished shift solenoids. Your tranny doesn't operate on vacuum. I wouldn't waste time trying to diagnose it myself. If you want to get the van running, get the vehicle over to a reputable tranny shop and get the full story with repair estimates.

i own a shop, and these ones has what is called a shift solenoid in them to make then go in gear if it goes out, or sticks,it wont go in any gear at all ,there's no vacuum, involved with any of the newer transmissions ,,if its not wanting to go in gear either the solenoid is stuck,or it has went out,,do this,,try pulling every fuse in it out ,and look at them real good to see if it has any blown ones,if you don't find any bad ones,,you can try the electrical connector at the transmission ,to see if it lose,,if not it needs to go to a transmission shop for further diagnostic test,,good luck hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

If an automatic transmission and the engine races when in gear and no movement, I'm afraid that it's time for a new or rebuild tranny.

Replace or rebuild.
Seen this before, stick a fork in it, it's done.
