Too many people try to illegally take money out of the country for unauthorized investments, banking in countries in which it can't be traced for tax purposes. Just today a man was caught with $70,000 in his pockets he said was Quoran holy books in an attempt to keep from being detected, and when searched, the money was found. That money could have been going to finance illegal weapons for Al-Qaeda for all we know.

Follow the money. If you're taking alot of cash out of the country, the money probably hasn't been taxed by the federal government, for example proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs, prostitution, loan sharking, etc. They want their pound of flesh !

Because if you are carrying more then that then you are either doing something illegal or just plain stupid. I am glad the goverment is keeping track of stupid people.

because there are a lot of evil people out there. and then there are those that try to smuggle large sums of money to elsewhere.

I would think it has a lot to do with drug dealing and smuggling...it's for you safety and for the safety of American citizens.

drug traffiking. if your loaded you dont really walk around with that kind of cash in your pocket. $2,000 in traverler's checks should be enough
