Ok...
First of all... domain registrations are paid by the whole year... lets say you pay for 2 years, 5 years, 1 year, etc.. you can't do lees than one.

Then.. the domain name gets registered to an email address (yours)
So that email address becomes kind of the "administrator", being the only one with power to sell the domain or do something else with it.

in other words.. if anyone wants to sell your domain name, he will need to have access to the email address used to register and administer the domain name.

Thats why your domain name should be registered to your name.

If the guy that helped you registering the domain, did it using his own company name and email, then you should ask him to transfer you the domain... to your email address and name.

You can check the status of your domain at the who is database.

go to http://who.godaddy.com and check for your domain name.
If he didn't use an anonymous service to hide the information, you should be able to see your info under the domain name registrant details.

Once you have the power on that domain, no one will have the right to take it. You don't even have to worry about using a website to maintain it alive or anything... you just take care of the expiration date, and renew it on time.
Put an "Under construction" page for the peace of mind if you want.. but it is not really necessary..

Good luck
